Gommaar Gilliams

고마르 길리엄(b.1982)은 브뤼셀의 LUCA 예술학교에서 시각예술을 전공하였으며 하셀트의 PXL 대학에서 회화 석사 학위를 취득하였다. 그의 작업은 미국 추상표현주의의 에너지와 중동 및 유럽의 상징주의에서 파생된 이미지를 혼합하여 추상과 재현의 경계에 있는 독창적인 화면을 구현한다. 그의 작품 속에는 신화적 인물, 동물, 식물, 달과 별 같은 이미지가 반복적으로 등장하는데, 이는 인간의 보편적 욕망과 향수, 그리고 상상의 세계를 드러낸다. 또한 염색한 직물 위에 유화 물감과 오일스틱을 중첩하여 그리는 방식을 통해 독창적 회화 세계를 추구한다.

주요 개인전으로는 개인전으로는 《Awake, Sleep》(Gallery Sofie Van de Velde, 안트베르펜, 벨기에, 2024), 《Retracing Walkways》(De Buck Gallery, 생폴드방스, 프랑스, 2024) 등이 있다. 단체전으로는  《Don’t think twice, it’s all right》(Gallery Sofie Van de Velde, 안트베르펜, 벨기에, 2024), 《felt cute, might delete later》(Arusha Gallery, 런던, 영국, 2023) 등이 있다.

Gommaar Gilliam (b.1982) received his BA Visual Arts from the LUCA School of Arts in Brussels and his MA Painting from the PXL MAD School of Arts in Hasselt. His work blends the energy of American Abstract Expressionism with imagery derived from Middle Eastern and European symbolism, resulting in original paintings that sit between abstraction and representation. Images such as mythological figures, animals, plants, the moon and stars repeatedly appear in his work, which reveal universal human desires, nostalgia, and the world of imagination. He also pursues an original approach to painting by layering oil paints and oil sticks on dyed fabrics.

Some of his selected solo exhibitions include 《Awake, Sleep》(Gallery Sofie Van de Velde, Antwerp, Belgium, 2024) and 《Retracing Walkways》(Saint-Paul de Vence, France, 2024).
