BRETT CHARLES SEILER

브렛 찰스 자일러(Brett Charles Seiler, b.1994, Zimbabwe)는 케이프타운을 기반으로 베를린과 라이프치히를 오가며 국제적인 활동을 이어가고 있는 작가이다. 그는 회화를 중심으로 남성의 신체와 사적인 공간, 퀴어 역사와 문학, 성서적 상징 등을 탐구하며, 욕망과 불안, 사랑과 소외가 공존하는 내면의 풍경을 구축해왔다. 사진과 시, 일상의 사물에서 출발한 그의 작업은 초상과 풍경, 현실과 꿈의 경계를 넘나들며 독자적인 회화 언어를 형성한다.

작가는 인물과 공간을 통해 인간 관계의 복합적인 감정 구조를 섬세하게 포착하며, 개인적 경험을 보다 보편적인 정서로 확장시킨다. 최근에는 회화뿐 아니라 나무 조각과 오브제를 병행하며 작업의 조형적 범위를 넓혀가고 있다. 최근 2026년 5월 베를린 갤러리 위크 기간에는 독일의 대표적인 현대미술 갤러리인 Galerie EIGEN + ART에서 개인전을 성공적으로 개최하며 국제 미술계의 주목을 받았다. 또한 A4 Arts Foundation, The Armory Show, Art Basel 등 주요 전시와 아트페어에 참여 해왔으며, 그의 작품은 남아프리카공화국의 Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa와 Norval Foundation 및 Homestead Art

Collection을 비롯해 유럽, 중국, 한국, 남아프리카공화국, 스위스, 대만, 미국 등 세계 각국의 주요 개인 컬렉션에 소장되어 있다.

Brett Charles Seiler (b. 1994, Zimbabwe) is a Cape Town–based artist working across painting, sculpture, and installation. Moving between Cape Town, Berlin, and Leipzig, Brett has developed a practice centered on the male body, domestic space, Queer history, literature, and Biblical symbolism. His paintings construct intimate psychological spaces in which desire and anxiety, love and alienation, memory and longing remain in constant tension. Drawing on photography, poetry, and the visual language of everyday objects, his works move between portraiture and landscape, lived experience and dream, articulated through a distinctive economy of material, color, and line. Brett’s figures and interiors register the complexities of intimacy and human relationships, translating autobiographical experience into broader meditations on desire, vulnerability, belonging, and loss. The raw surface of the canvas and the spare, often fragile quality of his painted lines heighten the sense of transience that runs throughout his work. More

recently, he has extended this language into wooden sculptures and objects, allowing motifs from his paintings to occupy physical space.

In May 2026, Brett presented a solo exhibition at Galerie EIGEN + ART in Berlin during Gallery Weekend Berlin. His work has been presented at A4 Arts Foundation and at international art fairs including The Armory Show and Art Basel. His work is held in the collections of Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa, Norval Foundation, and Homestead Art Collection, as well as in private collections across Europe, China, Korea, South Africa, Switzerland, Taiwan, and the United States.
